Email marketing pricing: DIY, freelancer, or agency?

Published on 2026-05-13 · Updated 20 October 2026 ·

Email marketing has two separate costs: your software subscription and the people who plan, build and manage it. EmailFlow advertises management at £800 per month. Confirm the campaign schedule, flow scope, platform charges and any additional work in your proposal.

What does the £800 management fee cover?

The service can include an account audit, lifecycle strategy, automated flow building, copywriting, design, segmentation, regular campaigns and reporting. Existing account quality and required integrations affect the work. Agree a written scope before starting; a monthly fee alone does not tell you how many campaigns or revisions are included.

Software is a separate budgeting decision

EmailFlow manages Omnisend only. Links to other vendors below are provided for independent platform research, not as services we offer.

The platforms listed below calculate prices using factors such as contact count, sending volume and plan features. SMS allowances, currency and tax can also change the total. Use the current vendor calculators for your actual list rather than treating a generic GBP estimate as a quote.

DIY, freelancer or agency?

ApproachBudget to compareUseful when
DIY or in-houseSoftware plus internal hours, training and QAYou can maintain the account consistently
FreelancerA scoped project or retainer quote plus softwareYou need a specific template, flow or campaign
AgencyAgreed management scope plus confirmed platform chargesYou need ongoing planning, execution and measurement

Compare quotes on the same deliverables. Avoid assuming that every freelancer lacks strategic expertise or that every agency includes all specialist work.

Calculate break-even using contribution, not attributed sales

Platform reports assign orders to email according to an attribution model. Those orders are not automatically additional sales created by the agency. A sound budget considers existing performance, gross margin, discounts, returns, software costs and likely incremental contribution.

Illustrative example: if management and incremental software costs total £1,000 per month and the contribution margin on genuinely additional orders is 40%, break-even requires £2,500 in additional revenue (£1,000 ÷ 0.40). This is a budgeting example, not a forecast.

EmailFlow's core service is aimed at stores above £10,000 monthly revenue. This is a service-fit threshold, not a universal rule that makes an agency profitable for every store above that level.

Five questions before signing

  1. Which flows, campaigns, revisions and reporting are included?
  2. Are software, SMS, migrations or integrations charged separately?
  3. Which attribution settings and business metrics will we use?
  4. What access, content and approvals are required for launch?
  5. Who owns the account, templates and workflows when the engagement ends?

How quickly should I expect a return?

Implementation time is different from payback time. Core automation can follow a seven-day plan once prerequisites are ready. Revenue outcomes depend on traffic, permissioned list size, customer behaviour and the offer. Agree a review schedule and success criteria without assuming a guaranteed return within a fixed number of days.
